9-11-16 ~ It's Sunday and Time for Tom's Barn Collective

On our way home last weekend from Damascus, VA, I spotted this little barn on the side of the road. Since I was driving there was no "Barn Alert " shouted.The two farmers were so nice to me and told me all about the place. My iPhone gave me a mean message that I had no more room for pictures, so I dragged out an old point and shoot. I did not know it but there was something wrong with it and it was blurring the sides of my pictures. The farmers gave me their names and addresses and I was going  to let them now when I posted the photos, but I lost the little sheet of paper. I just hope they kept theirs and will look anyway.

 This is the farmhouse and the pen and shed are where they raise the baby cows and then sell them to the farmer across the road who raises and then sells them.

 The full barn is used for hay and the hay loft is just odds and ends of stuff.

I was interested the size of the beams. The men told me the place was built in the 1920's.

I am so sorry this photo of the farmers came out so poorly...still I wanted to share it. The gentleman on the left was the farmer, and the other gentleman was his friend and helper.

I know Buddy got tired of me yapping with the guys. He had just finished an ultra marathon, and all he wanted to do was go home and hit the bed.

8-18-16 ~ The Hay Has Been Baled

Being from the ocean and Florida, seeing the field with the hay rolled into bales is a site I adore. The funnest one is getting behind the SLOW moving truck taking the bales to the right fields where they are needed. These fields are on the road to my home.

All of the following pictures were taken as I was driving Through Stuart's Draft, VA, to watch and wait while Buddy run another  crazy marathon....5 times up and down the same mountain. All I can say it is one killer of a run and only 50% finished....and my buy did it! I am SO proud of him. He can barely walk today, but he will be back hitting the pavement tomorrow. Like I have said...he is my Ever Ready Bunny that just keeps running, biking, and hiking ALL the time.

Living way out in the country like my husband and I do, we see lots of these funky racing cars. Having never been to our little speedway, or to any speedway for that matter, I do not have a clue for what kind of racing this vehicle was used. My guess is the economy has hit the owner hard because it has been sitting there for sale for a good while time. Every day driving to and from work I see it and wonder what the students would think and say if I drove up to the school in it. When it finally sells, we will have lost some of our local rural color.

The Old Stonewall Service Station

About a quarter of a mile up the mountain from our house sits this old service station. It is such a wonderful part of the local color, and the the family who owns the property keeps it painted and in good condition. From time to time they will rent it, but much of the time they just use it for storage.

Last weekend while driving on a back country road, I spied this old trailer. Needless to day, I informed my husband I wanted to return to the spot after our hike so I could shoot it for my Pink Saturday post .  Even though it is in terrible disrepair, I think the old trailer is pretty cool and funky.

Watery Wednesday #112 ~ 11-3-10

One of my greatest pleasures is watching my son and my 5 year old granddaughter playing in the creek where he played as a child. Eloise is fearless and loves jumping from rock to rock. On Sunday they first skipped rocks across the surface of the water, and then they went hopping from rock to rock down the creek. This was a great way to end our wonderful 3 days at Douthat State Park. As always, it was sad and lonely here at the homeplace after they left for their drive home, but that was a MUST because Eloise HAD to go “trick or treating” that night.

Trials and Tribulations with Black and White

I’ve not shot in black and white since “real” film disappeared from the shelves, but after looking at the photographs on “The Weekend in Black and White,” I decided to give it a try. Monochromatic pictures have always been my favorites, but with our filmless cameras I never thought I could do it. Geeze,  I am getting old.  It was so simple...all I had to do was go into the menu on my Canon Rebel and change the settings to Monochrome. Don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that one! I’m just a little bit slow on the draw. Having a creek on our property gives me ample opportunity to see if I can capture the light bouncing off of the water in this medium like I can do when I’m shooting in color.  The creek is low,  but still I was able to catch those magical light bubbles dancing on the surface.

The Pumpkins of Rockbridge County

           

WELCOME TO THE PUMPKINS OF ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Each morning on my way to work and then again on my way home, I pass the Swisher  farm.  All summer long they sell potatoes, tomatoes, corn, and all sorts of homegrown veggies, but come September they begin  putting out their humongous stash of pumpkins.

This is my exit off of I-81. Pretend I am in the car just about to go under the interstate overpass.

About a quarter of a mile down the road this is what I see....the Swisher farm and the pumpkins. It is only a hop and a skip from our school.

Shortly after the bell rang on Tuesday,  I asked my principal if I could run down down there for just a few minutes to take some photos of all the pumpkins, and he was kind enough to let me do it.  He knows what a nut I am about taking pictures of rural landscapes. 

They were quite the sight to behold. The closer I got to the piles the bigger they seemed to get. They were amazing! If this these photos don’t get you all in the mood for fall and Halloween, I don’t know what will do it.  They certainly did it to me ASAP!!!
